Observations of Singapore

🦁 Singapore is a very small country but that does not diminish the pride her people have in her.
🦁 While Singapore is not the pristine city I expected, it is very clean. That is in part because of the pride the people feel in their country, but also because of the high penalties of littering ($500 for eating or drinking on the Mass Rail Transit). Chewing gum is also prohibited in the city.
🦁 It is a safe city, in large part due to the hefty punishments on criminals (drug dealers are hanged).
🦁 Singapore is a new, young, modern city with great technology.
🦁 Singapore prides itself on its cultural diversity and acceptance of people of different religions and ethnicities.
🦁 Everyone speaks multiple languages. They all learn English (British) in school as well as their mother tongue (the language where their family is from).
🦁 The locals have their own sort of language jokingly called Singlish.
🦁 The national anthem is sung in Malay.
🦁 Singapore means Lion City and was so nicknamed because a prince visiting the area many centuries ago thought he saw one when he first landed even though there is no evidence that lions ever lived in this area of the world.
🦁 You cannot go hungry in this city. Food options abound!
🦁 It is very hot, but the locals have adjusted and thankfully most shops and restaurants have good air conditioning.
🦁 I never saw a single person begging nor one that appeared to be homeless.
🦁 While we in absolutely no way experienced all that this city has to offer, a few days seems to be enough to observe and enjoy this small city/country.
🦁 The Singapore dollar is currently at about 2/3 of the value of the US dollar which does not make things appear all that inexpensive, but looking at your credit card statement later is a nice sigh of relief.
🦁 The people are friendly, helpful, accepting and kind.
