Germany

Yesterday, we found a little piece of Scotland in northern Washington, today we found a little piece of Germany.

This morning, Stephanie's dad took us to a dam on the Columbia River just a few miles from their home. We went downstairs to watch as salmon swam up the "fish ladder." The fish are swimming from the ocean, returning to the place of their birth to spawn and then die. It was quite remarkable to watch the fish swimming upwards against the current.

Then, we went to a local market full of small shops of meats, cheeses, vegetables and homemade gift items.

Stephanie's father acted as our chauffeur and dropped us off in Leavenworth, a magical little European town in the middle of Washington. All of the buildings are decorated to give the appearance of being in a German or Austrian town, and the surrounding mountains added to the effect.

We had a lovely afternoon of wine tasting, shopping, eating, wine tasting and shopping before returning to Stephanie's parents' home to enjoy spending time together and a delicious home-cooked meal.

What a treat to find some of the treasures our country (and others!) have to offer!
